Three colonies of Dalits (from the Adi-Dravida community) near Naikkankottai in Dharmapuri district of western Tamil Nadu continued to be benumbed on Thursday through the fury unleashed in it with a rampaging mob of caste Hindus on Wednesday.
As much as 268 houses - sheds, tiled-roof and a couple of-room concrete houses - were torched through the mob following a caste Hindu guy, Nagarajan, committed suicide over his daughter getting married to a Dalit boy from among the colonies. Police stated there is no casualty as residents from the houses steered clear of and required shelter in another village. 90 persons were arrested by Thursday evening and cases registered against another 500 “unidentified” persons.
The best target from the attack was Natham Colony, whose resident, Ilavarasan (23) had married N. Divya (20), a caste Hindu. But, the mob’s fury seemed to be fond of the adjoining Anna Nagar Colony and Kondampatti New and old Colonies.
It's stated that Ilavarasan and Divya marry inside a temple last month. Fearing attack by caste Hindus, the pair contacted the Deputy Inspector of General of Police, Salem Range, Sanjay Kumar, only the other day for defense. Although the police assured them safety, a kangaroo court directed Ilavarasan’s family to come back the lady on Wednesday. The lady declined to choose her father, who later hanged themselves at his house in Sellankottai, just half a km in the Dalit colonies. After which, the mobs continued the rampage.
Based on police, one number of incensed people of his community protested around the Dharmapuri-Tiruppattur Road, obstructing traffic using the trees they felled in addition to with big chunks of rock and signboards. Simultaneously, another group joined the Dalit colonies and hang ablaze the houses. The Dalits alleged their houses were looted and also the belongings removed. The attack began around 4.45 p.m. and continued till 7 p.m. Police supports and fire tenders couldn't achieve the place over time due to the hurdles placed on the highway resulting in the colonies. Some automobiles from the Dalits too were torched. The mob fled when police supports showed up.
Superintendent of Police, Krishnagiri, M. Ashok Kumar, arrived at the place and required charge of the problem, as Dharmapuri’s SP Asra Garg was away in Madurai. Mr. Garg, however, arrived at the place during the night.
Police personnel attracted from five districts restored order. Fire tenders released the blaze within the colonies and recovery vans were used to obvious the street blocks.
A core police team headed by Mr. Sanjay Kumar exercised methods to help keep the problem in check. Inspector-General of Police (West Zone), visited the colonies on Thursday and supervised the safety plans and also the analysis in to the attack. Police stated Ilavarasan and Divya were safe and under police protection.
After investing the evening in shock, fear and without shelter, near to 1,500 Dalits were on Thursday covered in Government schools.
